Selin is the daughter of Turkish immigrants, and with the hope of becoming a writer, she takes classes in linguistics and Russian. The Idiot focuses on Selin, in her first year at Harvard (it’s set in the mid-nineties, so expect enjoyable details such as the wonder of email, and the jumpy delivery of music via a Discman). I was reminded of that feeling of absolute foreignness when I read Elif Batuman’s oddball novel, The Idiot. Even things as simple as recognising the name of the train station near to where we were staying – I simply couldn’t find a way of retaining any of it. Yes, you’re probably saying ‘Duh’ but despite attempts, I came away with no more Czech than I started with (i.e. When I was in Prague a couple of years ago, I was struck by how completely foreign the language (and alphabet) was. ![]() ![]() I enjoyed them even more in print than I did in eBook format. Before I delved into Iron’s Prophecy, I read Winters Passage and Summers Crossing again. Here’s the thing: Yes, Winters Passage and Summers Crossing were both released in eBook format, but this is the first time that they have been released in print. However, because I’m a completest with my books and have all the other Iron Fey novels in paperback and eBook, I decided to get The Iron Legends in paperback as well. I thought: So what’s the point? I’ve already read the other two novellas the guide to the Nevernerver included at the end of The Iron Knight and could wait until Iron’s Prophecy is released as an eBook. Two of them, Winters Passage and Summers Crossing, were released as eBooks and the third, Irons Prophecy, is new to the collection and will be released as a standalone eBook in September. The Iron Legends consists of three novellas and a guide to the Nevernever. Which is my lack of excitement at the release of The Iron Legends was perplexing to me. ![]() I absolutely love The Iron Fey series by Julie Kagawa. ![]() ![]() There’s an entire romance subplot that arises out of this, which I thought was kind of corny and forced, but more on that later. Some of them know each other a little too well beforehand, others are complete strangers. The premise of Portrait of a Thief is a fun one: a group of Chinese Americans, all around the same age (college), are brought together to steal back certain artifacts from the world’s most prestigious museums. ![]() Let’s dig into why.Ĭhinese American students and friends decide to steal back Chinese art for a lot of money. Before we get into the review, I must confess I wasn’t into this book as much as I expected. Books that have shorter chapters tend to go by a lot quicker I find, so it went as fast as I expected it to be. I ended up reading the entire book in the span of an hour and a half, which isn’t bad because I thought it was a pretty straightforward and simple read. ![]() So I checked it out at the library way after it was actually released. But then I completely forgot about this book until one day I was really bored and diving deep into my Goodreads on what to read next. I say one of my strengths as a writer is keeping my pulse on the writing industry as a whole, as I like to see what’s being published. And, me being the nosy person I am that likes to keep tabs on the publishing industry’s trends, knew I had to read this once I saw some streaming platform bought the rights to it. For awhile, before the slow death of writing Twitter as we knew it before, I found myself seeing this book and author all over my timeline. ![]() ![]() ![]() To learn more about how and for what purposes Amazon uses personal information (such as Amazon Store order history), please visit our Privacy Notice. Together Margery and Alice discover what it means to truly fight for the life you want to live, and how far the bonds of friendship can sustain us. The story primarily revolves around Alice, a British women brought to Kentucky by her new husband who quickly discovers the marriage to not be all she thought it would be and Margery, a bit of an outcast from town, but the feisty leader of the Packhorse Librarians, and a women not afraid to live by her own rules. I loved the lengths with which they would go to deliver books to their community, and the incredible life-changing impact that we all know that books have. I was immediately drawn into the beautiful descriptions of the Kentucky mountains, and by each unique character fighting to break free of the traditional expectations set upon women and create a life for themselves. As you can probably tell, I LOVED this story. The women are all vastly different, but the way they come together to protect each other and serve their community is incredible.
