At the center is Evvie, a wise and charming teen, who knows her own mind. The character of the meddling old dowager, Grace, pervades the story and sets the background for conflict, while Evvie's father Nick is believable as the persistent dreamer. The crisp dialogue is right on target, giving each scene light drama and occasional humor. The story has everything teenagers will want: mystery and suspense, strong family ties, and summer love. Adding mystery is that both Nick and Sam have skeletons in the closet. She prefers the handsome Schyler, whose attentions toward Evvie prove to be trumped up by Aunt Grace. Yet history seems to repeat itself when Aunt Grace reveals her disapproval of Evvie's friend, Sam, a Jewish boy who doesn't have the right credentials. Although intimidated by this aunt who has always disapproved of Evvie's father, Evvie has the good sense and wit to sidestep Grace's opinionated lectures, and Grace comes to depend on Evvie for companionship. Grade 7-12 Sixteen-year-old Evvie, the oldest of the four Sebastian sisters, spends the summer in a resort town helping her Great-aunt Grace, who has broken her leg.
